Death Heads & Winged Soul Effigies
Intricately carved death heads and winged soul effigies adorned typical of gravestones from the 1600 and 1700’s, these decorative features were the earliest form of funerary art in the United States.
All of these Death Heads were found in New York.
Potter's Fields
Many state-run psychiatric institutions of the past marked the graves of unclaimed deceased patients with nothing but a number. No dates, no names.
Now, many states keep these burial records confidential. The practice is dated and marked with indignity, like many of the practices of care during the times these large state institutions housed the mentally ill.
These are hallowed grounds.
